Course Description

Hours: 12

The art of excellent clinical work lies in the ability to ask meaningful therapeutic questions — questions that create immediate movement, deepen reflection and continue resonating with clients long after the session ends. Effective questions do more than gather information; they uncover patterns, reveal context, challenge oppressive dynamics, invite new possibilities and engage clients in the process of change. Whether working with individuals, couples, families or groups, thoughtful questioning is one of the most powerful tools clinicians possess.

This Professional Development course will explore and strengthen the art and skill of therapeutic questioning across a variety of clinical contexts and approaches. Participants will develop a broader repertoire of purposeful, effective questions that can be adapted to different therapeutic settings, client needs, and professional roles.

Participants can expect to learn and practice questions drawn from the following frameworks:

  • linear questions
  • circular questions
  • reflexive questions
  • strategic questions

The course will also explore the use of therapeutic questioning within the following approaches:

  • narrative therapy
  • solution-focused therapy
