Course Description

Hours: 12

DBT’s change orientation is pulled firmly from behavioural learning theory and cognitive behaviour theory. Its acceptance orientation is pulled from Zen Buddhism, the eastern philosophy that Marsha Linehan was introduced to in her exploration of alternatives to changed focused psychotherapy. The focus of this Professional Development course is a deeper investigation and understanding of Zen Buddhism’s specific influence on the principles and skills that were developed as part of DBT. It will also highlight the similarities between Zen and behavioural and cognitive behavioural theory. Lastly, we will explore the risks of integrating Zen into western developed psychotherapy and the whitewashing of Buddhism within today’s mindfulness industry and how to be sensitive to this within the implementation of DBT.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this Professional Development course participants will be able to:
  • Understand the basic tenets of Zen Buddhism.
