Course Description

Hours: 12

There is a growing rate of eating disorder diagnoses, however, relatively few mental health professionals or outpatient programs are available to meet the need. Additionally, clients with eating disorders may also present with other comorbid high-risk behaviours such as suicidal and self-harm ideation or behaviours which often exclude them for specialized eating disorder services. DBT has been adapted to treat multi-diagnostic clients with eating disorders and the focus of this Professional Development course will be on identifying and applying those adaptations. It will include the theoretical and practical adaptations of the individual therapy and skills modes of comprehensive DBT. Completion of a comprehensive DBT training is required, however in-depth training of eating disorders is not required

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this Professional Development course participants will be able to:
  • Understand the strengths and limitations of DBT across the various eating disorder diagnoses and when other evidenced-based treatment models are recommended.
  • Understand the various symptoms of eating disorders and their relationship to the case conceptualization and treatment planning process.
  • Identify the core principles that are used to develop treatment plans for eating disorders.
  • Understand adaptations used in individual therapy sessions and DBT skills groups as well as how DBT skills can be applied specifically for clients with eating disorders.
  • Identify how to develop individual therapy session agenda and treatment hierarchy that includes ongoing assessment of eating disorder symptoms.
