Course Description

This comprehensive Professional Development course delves into the intricacies of attachment during childhood and adolescence, examining the evolution of attachment categories and their manifestation during these pivotal developmental phases. Participants will gain insight into the latest research on attachment and brain development, and their profound implications for therapeutic practices. The course provides a foundation for the practical application of attachment-focused therapy in both a family and individual context.

Central to this therapeutic approach is the relationship between the therapist and the adolescent, which serves as the primary catalyst for change. The ultimate objective of attachment-focused therapy is to guide children and youth (preferably involving a parent or caregiver) towards greater attachment security— equipping them with the foundation for healthy, secure adult relationships.

The course will cover:
•    A concise overview of attachment theory.
•    The categorization of child attachment styles.
•    The dynamics of attachment in children and youth.
•    Strategies for attachment-focused family and individual therapy.
•    The critical role of the therapist in attachment-focused work.
•    Exploring and understanding therapist’s own attachment style and how it relates to their role as therapist.
•    Practical case examples, video demonstrations, and interactive exercises to illustrate therapeutic interventions.

This Professional Development course is designed to equip psychotherapists with the knowledge and skills to effectively support children, youth and families in navigating their attachment journeys, fostering resilience and secure attachment as they transition into adulthood.
