0227 - Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders: An Overview of Diagnostics, Assessment, and Treatment Options

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex, life-threatening mental health conditions with high relapse rates and one of the highest mortality rates among psychiatric illnesses. Research indicates that the age of onset is occurring earlier, underscoring the need for prompt identification and intervention to improve outcomes. However, due to the secretive nature of EDs and the lack of specialized training among professionals, many young people remain undiagnosed for extended periods—significantly reducing their chances of full recovery. The psychological complexities and severe medical risks associated with EDs make treatment challenging, and without specialized training, clinicians may struggle to implement the most effective, evidence-based approaches. Despite the urgent need, there remains a shortage of evidence-based treatments and accessible services for youth and their families.

This two-day workshop is designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the biological, psychological and environmental factors contributing to the development and maintenance of EDs in children and adolescents. The workshop will cover critical topics, including the medical and psychiatric risks associated with EDs and the challenges of treating eating disorders in pediatric populations.

Participants will gain practical tools for screening, assessment and diagnosis, along with an in-depth understanding of current first-line and second-line treatment approaches. Evidence-based modalities such as family-based treatment (FBT), cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) for eating disorders will be explored. Through interactive discussions, case demonstrations and role-playing exercises, attendees will develop confidence and competence in supporting young people with EDs and making informed treatment referrals.
