0326 - Prolonged Exposure
Course Description
Hours: 12
Prolonged exposure (PE) is an evidence-based practice for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PE shares some theoretical overlap with cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). It is a structured, time limited intervention that has demonstrated efficacy in individuals who have experienced a range of traumas including, but not limited to, sexual assault, physical assault, accident, military and first responder related trauma.
This two-day Professional Development course will expose participants to theory and practices that underpin PE. Participants will learn essentials of PE such as:
- How to discuss with a client the problematic role that avoidance plays in the development and maintenance of PTSD.
- Teaching a client to participate in breathing retraining.
- Developing a hierarchy of feared situations to address in the therapy.
- How to introduce and conduct in-vivo exposures.
- How to introduce and conduct imaginal exposures.
- How to use Socratic and other questioning styles to help clients process traumatic experiences.
