Course Description

Hours: 36

NOTE: This course was previously a Level I course. If you completed Sacred Circle CBT – Mikwendaagwad: “It is Remembered, it comes to mind” as a Level I course, please select a different Level II course to complete your CBT certificate.

This course embraces the vision of Etuaptmumk – Two Eyed Seeing. Culturally adapting cognitive therapy techniques for Indigenous populations, this innovative course will support participants to understand these key outcomes:

  • Current literature and research on Indigenous adapted structured psychotherapy.
  • Process adaptations and case conceptualization considerations for delivering structured psychotherapy using an Etuaptmumk Two Eyed Seeing focus, including understandings of historical and intergenerational trauma.
  • Using role plays and demonstrations, as well as with a plethora of worksheets, demonstrate how CBT interventions can be adapted for Indigenous peoples and communities; with examples and interventions adapted for Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Cree, Métis and Mi'kmaq cultures.
  • Advanced CBT interventions for supporting Indigenous adapted trauma narrative and reminders exposure therapy.
  • Key considerations for using Indigenous adapted CBT for substance use disorder.

This course has been developed by an Anishinaabe cognitive therapist and will include a focus on how to use these interventions as a non-Indigenous ally clinician. This course will be taught by Indigenous and non-Indigenous ally trainers.
