Course Description

Hours: 12

This two-day course offers a unique perspective on domestic abuse, police response and the criminal justice system. Knowledge of these systems can help social workers and other mental health professionals understand the reasons behind decisions made by victims, police officers and the judiciary, as well as the implications for individuals that may be affected by domestic abuse and “the system”.

Over this two day course, we will discuss:

  • How to best provide support for individuals who are navigating domestic abuse (both criminal and non-criminal).
  • Intimate partner violence.
  • Police investigation (establishing reasonable and probable grounds).
  • Police procedure (including mandatory charging policies).
  • The criminal justice system.
  • Court orders (and their implications).
  • Available support services.
  • Safety planning.

Knowledge of these systems may provide you with clarity and understanding, better equipping you to confidently support your clients as they navigate police response to domestic violence and the criminal justice system.
