Course Description

Hours: 12

It is well-established that up to 70% of children and youth with Autism are diagnosed with a mental health issue during childhood. Despite this significant prevalence, many mental health professionals working with children, teens and families have not received formal training in Autism, which can lead to a lack of confidence and comfort when providing care to neurodivergent clients. This two-day workshop aims to equip attendees with an understanding of the intersection between Autism and mental health disorders and provide effective strategies for supporting this population.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the factors contributing to the elevated mental health risks for children and youth with Autism, including trauma, diversity and intersectionality within the Autism community, and the systemic marginalization many individuals face when accessing services.
  • Gain knowledge of the signs and symptoms commonly observed in clients with dual diagnoses.
  • Explore common treatment goals and psychotherapeutic interventions designed to support the mental health of Autistic clients.
  • Acquire practical strategies for adapting interventions to meet the unique needs of Autistic clients, with an emphasis on providing neurodiversity-affirming practices.
