Course Description

Hours: 12

Human trafficking remains one of the most pervasive and underrecognized human rights violations in our society—often hidden in plain sight. Throughout this two-day interactive course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of human trafficking, and learn practical ways to identify, support and advocate for those affected.

Through a combination of case studies, real-world examples and evidence-based strategies, the course will cover:

  • A foundational overview of human trafficking, including the scope and impact at local, national and global levels.
  • Common tactics and methods of recruitment, grooming and exploitation used by traffickers.
  • Insight into how trafficking can occur in everyday settings—and how to recognize the often subtle, easily overlooked signs.
  • Key behavioral, emotional and environmental "red flags" that may indicate a client is currently being exploited or is at risk.
  • Best practices for engaging and supporting clients who may be entangled in trafficking situations, including trauma-informed approaches and safety planning.
  • An exploration of risk factors that increase vulnerability—especially among youth and marginalized populations.
  • Strategies for proactive, community-based education and prevention to help mitigate these risks before exploitation occurs.

Participants will leave this training with enhanced awareness, sharpened assessment skills and actionable strategies to intervene early and support survivors with empathy, sensitivity, and effectiveness.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define human trafficking and distinguish between its various forms.
  • Identify common recruitment tactics and patterns of coercion used by traffickers.
  • Recognize indicators of trafficking that may present in clinical or community settings.
  • Apply trauma-informed techniques when working with suspected or confirmed trafficking survivors.
  • Assess key risk factors and implement prevention-oriented education with at-risk populations.
  • Strengthen interprofessional collaboration and resource linkage to improve client outcomes.
