Course Description

Hours: 6

Substantial research supports the importance of one’s personal narrative in overcoming challenging experiences, including life transitions and trauma. Multiple therapeutic modalities, including narrative therapy and trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) use the personal narrative as part of the healing process. In this one-day training, participants will learn the nuts and bolts of journalling and storytelling as a therapeutic tool, and how to integrate it into their psychotherapy practice.

Participants will learn how journaling can be used to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety and trauma, help clients process distressing memories, make sense of their experiences and find resilience through self-reflection. With hands-on exercises and case discussions, participants will diversify their clinical toolbox to help enhance their client’s self-reflection, emotional awareness and personal resilience, through the development of a coherent personal narrative.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review research literature on the effectiveness of journaling as a therapeutic tool and the role of personal narrative for mental health.
  2. Understand theoretical underpinnings of journalling.
  3. Identify and use different journaling techniques suited for various therapeutic stages and goals.
  4. Integrate personalized journaling interventions that align with a client’s needs, presentation, and cultural considerations.
  5. Address potential barriers to journaling engagement.

The training combines didactic teaching, case discussions, and practice of various journalling strategies. Participants should arrive ready to practice various skills and be open to discussing their process.

Note: This course is appropriate for clinicians with any level of experience and practice.
