0613 - Rural Women’s Mental Health
Course Description
Hours: 6
This session addresses the critical, often overlooked, mental health needs of women living in rural, remote and northern regions. Grounded in a social determinants lens, the course explores how geographic isolation, stigma, scarcity of services, economic precarity and cultural norms intersect with gender to create unique challenges in accessing care.
Participants will examine the persistent gaps between rural realities and urban-designed systems, including the emotional toll of invisibility and the practical implications of limited privacy, underfunded supports and siloed services. Through reflective dialogue and case examples, the training offers insight into place-based models, peer-driven approaches and grassroots innovations that have emerged from within rural communities themselves.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to build trust, foster collaboration and advocate for mental health equity in underserved settings—all while honouring the strengths, resilience, and lived expertise of rural women.
