0628 - Women, Criminalization and Mental Health

Course Description

Hours: 6

This participatory workshop will explore the impact of various forms of inequities and violence on the criminalization and imprisonment of women and mental health. It will be facilitated by a social work professor and trauma therapist who has worked in women’s prisons and by a social worker with lived experience of incarceration.

Topics will include:

• Supporting criminalized women from a feminist abolitionist framework for mental health.
• Understanding imprisonment through a trauma-informed lens.
• Connections between childhood sexual abuse, gender violence, racism, colonialism and other forms of trauma and imprisonment.
• Issues of trust, confidentiality and re-traumatization.
• Creating community supports post-imprisonment.
• Meaningful involvement of people with lived experience in mental health supports.

This workshop is conducted using collaborative adult learning practices to foster integrative and collective learning. It is hoped that participants will come prepared to engage in discussion and activities.
