Course Description

Hours: 12

This clinically focused workshop explores how child therapists and other pediatric helping professionals can move beyond standardized measures and symptom checklists to develop rich, relational and developmentally responsive assessments with children and families.

Grounded in theory and practice, participants will learn how assessment begins from the very first contact with caregivers and continues throughout the therapeutic process through observation, play, relationship, symbolism and interaction. Using a combination of case examples, experiential activities and practical tools, this training examines how clinicians can gather meaningful clinical information through both directive and non-directive assessment approaches while maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance with children and caregivers.

Special attention will be given to understanding the child in context, identifying strengths alongside areas for growth, and translating assessment observations into treatment goals that align with therapy modalities and developmental needs. The workshop also addresses practical and ethical considerations including rapport building, therapist authenticity, parent communication, self-disclosure, accessibility and navigating complex family systems.

Participants will leave with concrete strategies, observation frameworks, assessment activities and treatment planning tools that can be immediately integrated into clinical work with children and families.
