0695 - DBT-Kids: Part 2 – Working with Families
Course Description
Hours: 12
This Part 2 training will deepen participants’ knowledge of DBT-Kids, an intervention developed by Drs. Alan and Armida Fruzzetti through the expansion of DBT strategies for use with families of kids (ages 12 and under) who struggle with emotion dysregulation. The intervention involves individual, family and group components. For Part 2, participants can expect the use of didactics, role plays, exercises and resources to demonstrate:
- Working with emotions in kids, caregivers and families.
- The use of Behaviour Chain Analysis (BCAs) in kids, caregivers and families.
- Structures, skills and strategies for family sessions in DBT-Kids.
- Coaching family members to apply adapted DBT skills in session.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Formulate client, caregiver and family challenges in terms of primary and secondary emotions and the transactional model of emotion dysregulation.
- Conduct DBT family sessions, including managing dysregulated family members.
- Conduct “double chains” (i.e. chain analyses with two or more family members simultaneously) to understand how family transactions evolve and contribute to problem behaviours.
- Utilize the double chain to weave in traditional and new skills as solutions, including
- accurate expression and validating responses
- relationship mindfulness
- collaborative problem-solving*
*Collaborative problem solving referenced in DBT for families is not the same as the evidenced-based intervention named Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) by Greene and Ablon.
