Course Description

It is well-established in the literature that colonialism, racism, sexism, and the over-policing of Indigenous peoples are linked to alarming rates of incarceration of Indigenous peoples. However, less attention is paid to the actual logics of carcerality, especially those which exist outside of the prison system. This two-day module will not only delve into the experiences of traumatic stress involved in the criminalization and incarceration of Indigenous people, but it will also discuss presentations of colonial and carceral logics within individuals, kinship structures, and communities. Participants will develop their wholistic lens to better identify – and respond to – carceral logics in their personal, interpersonal, and professional realms.

Course Outline

This module will:

  • Help establish a knowledge set of carceral logics, what it is, its impacts on people, and how it presents throughout various realms within society.

  • Investigate alternative methods of addressing harm, both in working with victims of harm as well as those who have inflicted harm.

  • Engage a wholistic lens towards healing work, especially within carceral systems and with incarcerated individuals.

Learner Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Better understand the colonial context of disproportionate incarceration rates among Indigenous peoples, particularly for Two Spirit, queer, and/or disabled Indigenous individuals.

  • Develop a critical understanding of carceral logics as they present within the self, communities, carceral system, and society as a whole.

  • Develop a wholistic approach to working with incarcerated individuals as well as skills to advocate for change.
