Course Description

Hours: 12

Helping professionals, clinicians, educators, first responders, public works staff and those encountering vulnerable populations may regularly encounter conflict and the need to de-escalate and manage crisis situations in their work environment. These circumstances can seem overwhelming and taxing, even for the most seasoned professional. However, managing conflict and crisis effectively can dramatically decrease individual, family and a community’s possible traumatic and/or mental health reactions, increase coping strategies, reduce the possibility of chronic or less adaptive symptoms and re-establish pre-crisis equilibrium. The emphasis of this workshop will relate to mental health crises in a variety of possible settings with various populations.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants can expect to:

  • Increase their knowledge base related to conflict resolution and crisis intervention theory, as well as models of practice and their application.
  • Become more familiar with early and danger warning signs related to escalations.
  • Gain valuable verbal, non-verbal and non physical de-escalation skills for individuals with varying presentations (including individuals with disorganized thoughts, alcohol-related behaviours, etc.).
  • Increase one’s awareness regarding personal and organizational safety considerations.
  • Increase their awareness of personal reflexivity, triggers, values and beliefs related to conflict and crisis themes.
  • Review skills in assessing for suicidality.
  • Increase familiarity with mental health care plans and their application.
  • Review  the role of broader systemic influences in working with diverse populations/social locations and the possible role of spirituality as it relates to crises.
  • And..... so much more!

This workshop will offer numerous practical skills and interventions, case examples, practice exercises, video clips and rich discussions as experiences are shared by the instructor and participants. In addition, there will be useful handouts for future referencing.

Please Note:  As themes for review are quite varied and are all important, there is room for flexibility around the workshop themes, depending on the experiences and interests of the participants. Hope to see you there!
