0180 - An Introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Course Description
Hours: 12
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) was initially developed for individuals with complex mental health problems and engaging in suicidal behaviour and comorbid substance use issues. It is the only evidenced-based intervention for borderline personality disorder, though this is not what it was initially developed to treat. In the last 20 years, DBT has been adapted to a wider range of severe emotional dysregulation disorders (bipolar, binge eating disorder) and effectively applied within a wide range of clinical settings (forensic, school, hospital, residential). DBT focuses on improving clients’ ability to tolerate intense emotions, manage distressing situations without making them worse, improve interpersonal effectiveness and increase mindfulness skills all within a comprehensive, multi-mode treatment modality.
The overarching objective of this Professional Development course is to provide participants with exposure to different aspects of DBT: structures, principles, communication style and key skills so that participants can decide whether to pursue further comprehensive training in DBT.
At the end of this two-day course participants will be able to:
- Explain the main theories that inform DBT.
- Describe the structure and modes of treatment of DBT.
- Review the five modules of DBT skills group.
- Explain dialectics and validation and its role within the treatment.
- Describe stylistic strategies of DBT and their functions.
