Course Description

In response to the TRC Calls to Action on education, this course will help prepare teachers to be able to embed culturally appropriate First Nations, Inuit and Métis traditions, histories and contemporary realities into their classrooms and schools. Live streaming sessions will include guest visits from local First Nations,
Inuit and Métis community partners.
 

This course will help educators to:

  • Know the truth about the history of this land now called Canada
  • Understand traditional teachings, histories, current issues and cultures of First Nation, Inuit and Métis Peoples
  • Strengthen professional efficacy by gaining in-depth knowledge, refine professional judgments and generate new knowledges for practice
  • Learn about and utilize Indigenous learning models which are key to this understanding

The knowledges and skills developed in this course will:

  • Help educators better address many of the performance measures outlined in The Ontario First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework (2007) and the accompanying Implementation Plan (2014)
  • Prepare teachers for phase one of the inclusion of mandatory indigenous content (histories, traditions and cultures) for social studies grades 4-6, and history grades 7, 8 and 10 in Ontario curriculum
  • Help educators support students of First Nation, Métis and Inuit ancestry in student achievement, well-being and meeting provincial standards on provincewide assessments in reading, writing and mathematics

Refunds

  • Up to and including the first day of course: Full refund less 15% administrative fee.
  • No refunds will be issued after the first day of the course.
  • If course is cancelled due to insufficient registration: 100% refund

Prerequisites

  • It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that they are eligible to take this course and have it applied to their OCT record.  

  • Must be a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
