Course Description

Hours: 12

Eating disorders (EDs) are serious, life threatening mental health concerns. They have high relapse and chronicity rates and have one of the highest mortality rates among psychiatric illnesses. The demographics of EDs show the age of onset as appearing earlier in a young person’s life than ever before. Literature demonstrates that early identification and evidence-based treatment are key to the successful interruption and recovery from an ED. Unfortunately, due to the secretive nature of EDs and professionals not adequately trained to identify them, many young people go undiagnosed for a long period of time, impacting their chances of a full recovery. Additionally, the psychological complexities and significant medical complications that arise from EDs can be overwhelming and may lead clinicians to implement treatment that is not based in evidence and/or contraindicated. In general, there is a dearth of evidence-based treatments and services to support youth and families.

This two-day workshop aims to increase participants’ understanding of the elements that contribute to the development and maintenance of EDs in children and adolescents, the medical and psychiatric risks, as well as provide tools for identification and assessment. Furthermore, this workshop will also provide participants with an in-depth overview and demonstration of the current evidence-based treatment for EDs, as well as the second-line treatment approaches. PowerPoint, discussion, demonstration, and role play will assist with the additional goal of increasing your confidence and skill in providing some preliminary therapeutic treatment or referral recommendations for young people presenting with an ED.
