Course Description

Hours: 12

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) represents one of the more contemporary, transdiagnostic models of psychotherapy, one that incorporates mindfulness and acceptance processes. ACT has a particular focus on the function of a client’s behaviour in a specific context, exploring the purpose of that behaviour and whether it is moving clients towards or away from a life that reflects what truly matters to them.

Enter the ACT Matrix (developed by Polk, Hambright and Webster), a simple, effective and powerful framework for delivering ACT, that is easy-to-use for any concern that presents in therapy (or in life in general)! This workshop will aim to expand your clinical repertoire by exploring how to:
•    introduce the Matrix to clients
•    coach clients to use the Matrix’s key skills
•    model use of these skills as the therapist
•    incorporate client accountability
•    develop the Matrix over the course of several sessions by weaving in classic ACT exercises and metaphors

This two-day workshop will assume participants have some familiarity with the six processes of the ACT Hexaflex (acceptance, defusion, present-moment contact, self as context, values and committed action) which represent the foundation of the Matrix. In the spirit of ACT as an interactive model, experiential exercises and practice will accompany PowerPoint and demonstration to guide our exploration of the applicability of the Matrix.
