Course Description



This micro-credential equips educators and those who work with children with much needed tools to support young people experiencing challenges with substance abuse and FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). You will develop new skills, practices, and ideas for supporting positive student mental health from a proactive and preventative perspective. 

Each of the six micro-credentials in this series and certificate program prepares you to support children and youth experiencing the most common and serious mental illnesses and disorders. 

Why are educators taking these micro-credentials?

Public and private school educators, administrators youth program workers, and others who work with children are the frontline responders to growing mental health needs among children and youth:

  • Since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people have increased. 39% of students feel the pandemic negatively affected their mental health "very much" or "extremely."

  • 1.2 million children and youth are affected by a mental illness, but less than one-third connect with a mental health professional.  

  • Studies in Canada indicate a $6-$16 return per $1 invested in school mental health. Investments in school mental health also yield cost savings in other sectors like health and justice.  

  • Research shows supporting mental needs through early intervention is associated with social, emotional and academic student success.

About the FASD and Substance Abuse in Children and Youth Module 

Substance use is one of the most pervasive mental health issues. However, this mental health concern is rarely addressed directly in schools.

Many educators are left with more questions than answers surrounding the best ways to support and teach young people learn about the risks of substance use. This skill-based micro-credential equips educators with deeper understanding of three topics:

  • The Fundamentals of FASD and Substance Abuse
  • Responding to Distress
  • Building Support and Skills

By the end of the micro-credential, participants will:  

  • Begin to recognize signs of substance abuse and learn how to prevent substance abuse by encouraging healthy choices among students from mental health and education experts. 

  • Learn best practices and skills for supporting learning needs of students with FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder).

  • Participate in discussion and idea exchange with other teachers, workers, and childcare professionals to discover how to apply preventative mental health approaches to your classroom. 

  • Engage in video analysis and case studies for applied practice and learning and take-away resources to continuously apply your learning. 

  • Join our supportive community of hundreds of educators and youth mental health advocates who have already received their credentials.

  • Participants are required to complete the content within four weeks from the start date.
     
  • Typically, this micro-credential can be completed in less than 15 hours.
     
  • Upon completion, you will receive a Mental Health Skills for Educators micro-credential from Laurier Continuing Education and Faculty of Education
