Course Description

Public and private school educators are often the frontline responders to growing mental health needs among children and youth:   

  • Since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people have increased. 39% of students feel the pandemic negatively affected their mental health "very much" or "extremely."

  • 1.2 million children and youth are affected by a mental illness, but less than one-third connect with a mental health professional.  

  • Studies in Canada indicate a $6-$16 return per $1 invested in school mental health. Investments in school mental health also yield cost savings in other sectors like health and justice.  

  • Research shows supporting mental needs through early intervention is associated with social, emotional and academic student success.

About the Mental Health Skills for Educators micro-credentials 

This series of micro credentials equips educators and those who work with children with much needed tools to support young people experiencing mental health challenges. 

You will develop new skills, practices, and ideas for supporting positive student mental health from a proactive and preventative perspective. 

Each of the seven micro credentials in this series prepares you to support children and youth experiencing the most common and serious mental illnesses and disorders. 

 

About the Psychosis and Disruptive Behaviour Disorders in Children and Youth Module 

Psychosis and behaviour disorders are the most misunderstood mental illnesses among the public. It can be a struggle for those working with children to find factual and accurate information on how to best recognize, address and prevent these serious mental illnesses. 

This micro-credential equips educators with the latest research-based information across three topics:

  • The Fundamentals of Psychosis and Mood Disorders
  • Responding to Distress
  • Building Support and Skills

 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the micro-credential, participants will:  

  • Begin to recognize early signs of psychosis and disruptive behaviour disorders for early and preventative interventions. 

  • Learn best practices and skills for supporting learning needs of students with psychosis and disruptive behaviour disorders, and how to educate your classroom skills and competencies to manage illnesses like psychosis. 

  • Participate in discussion and idea exchange with other teachers, workers, and childcare professionals to discover how to apply preventative mental health approaches to your classroom. 

  • Engage in video analysis and case studies for applied practice and learning and take-away resources to continuously apply your learning. 

  • Join our supportive community of hundreds of educators and youth mental health advocates who have already received their credentials. 

Participants are required to complete the content within four weeks from the start date. Typically, this micro-credential can be completed in less than 15 hours
