0401 - Advanced Motivational Interviewing
Course Description
Hours: 12
The training will cover phase one and two processes of motivational interview (MI), including the principles, skills, evocation and deepening of the awareness of sustain/change talk in session, with emphasis on moving more towards change talk as the session progresses. This training will include an educational review of key concepts from MI phase 1 and 2 therapy approaches and following this, a practical interactive learning experience of these key concepts linking theory to practice. This advanced MI session will focus on enhancing the applied skills regarding:
- four processes of MI
- traps that promote disengagement
- developing the skills of effective reflective responses
- integrating values to achieving desired goals
- four styles of ambivalence
- choosing neutrality to explore ambivalence.
- four subtypes of preparatory change talk
- mobilizing activation change talk.
- effective ways to respond to discord.
- eliciting change talk.
- identifying ‘hidden’ embedded change talk.
- moving from evoking to ‘planning.’
- strengthening the commitment plan
- the importance of process, not just content
