Course Description

Working with couples requires a range of clinical skills. This two-day introductory course will provide a framework for couple work, including the evolution of systemic thinking. We will explore the basic couple skills necessary for effective couple work, and the nuanced art of engaging and building rapport, increasing hope, and discovering the wish behind the frustration. Evidence-based theories and popular models of couple therapy will also be introduced. The emphasis of this course will be on learning the most effective interventions and skills, and how to integrate them into practice for successful couple work.
By the end of this course participants will:
• Understand systems theory and how to think systemically when working with couples.
• Develop rapport building and hope building skills.
• Be able to identify the common couple patterns and strategies to interrupt them.
• Be knowledgeable about attachment theory.
• Know how to de-escalate and regulate clients.
• Know how to co-construct a common goal with the couple and keep the session on track.
• Be able to provide effective communication skills to couples.
• Have acquired practical couple interventions and techniques.
• Have a basic introduction to at least three of the most popular and evidence based couple models.
