This course was previously called Working with Older Populations: Essential Knowledge for Practice


This two-day course is designed specifically for social workers supporting individuals and families living with dementia. Led by Cathy Barrick, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, the course provides a practical and compassionate overview of dementia through a social work lens. Topics include the diagnostic process, stages of progression, person-centred and trauma-informed approaches, effective communication strategies and family systems support. With emphasis on assessment, care planning, and navigating responsive behaviours, participants will strengthen their ability to provide holistic, culturally safe, and client-focused care across diverse practice settings.
