Course Description

This comprehensive two-day workshop is designed to provide participants with a solid understanding of the principles, practices and applications of restorative justice, an approach to addressing harm and conflict that focuses on healing, accountability and community engagement. This workshop will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to begin to implement restorative justice approaches in their professional and personal lives.

Module 1: Introduction to Restorative Justice

  • Defining trauma informed restorative justice and its core principles.
  • Contrasting restorative justice with traditional punitive and rehabilitative approaches.
  • Exploring the historical and cultural context of restorative justice.

Module 2: Understanding Harm and Justice Needs

  • Examining the nature and consequences of harm. 
  • Recognizing the justice needs of individuals, relationships and communities.
  • Identifying the need for healing and restoration

Module 3: Restorative Justice in Practice

  • Review of restorative justice practices.
  • Applying restorative questioning.

Module 4: Ethical Considerations and Implementation  

  • Exploring the ethical implications of restorative justice practices.
  • Overcoming barriers and resistance to restorative justice implementation.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the Foundations of Restorative Justice workshop, participants will have gained a solid foundation in restorative justice theory, practice and options for implementation. They will be equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to the transformation of their communities by promoting healing, accountability and positive social change through restorative justice principles.
