Course Description
In this two-day module, the material will examine some of Canada's history as it pertains to Indigenous food systems. This content will include modern-day challenges, contemporary efforts to restore and regain sovereignty over Indigenous food systems, resurgence, and resistance. The module will also offer examples of best practices for helping professions with opportunities for circle participants to share their own ideas. Each day will feature a related activity for participants to engage in.
Course Outline
This module will:

Delve into the importance of food to Indigenous nations, which stems far beyond what is served at mealtimes.

Explore Canada’s history with Indigenous food and food systems, with a particular focus on how colonization has impacted Indigenous food security and sovereignty over time.

Offer wholistic practice and advocacy strategies as they pertain to understanding and promoting food security among Indigenous peoples.
Learner Outcomes
Participants will:

Strengthen their understanding of the challenges Indigenous people in Canada face, especially as it relates to food histories and current systems.

Learn about the significance of food and food systems in Indigenous communities through highly interactive circle participation.

Gain some strategies for wholistic practice as it pertains to working with Indigenous people and food security, and ideas for advocacy.
