Course Description

Hours: 6

This session builds on fundamental skills learned in the introductory Trauma-Centred Psychotherapy (TCP) Techniques workshop. This Professional Development course will include a didactic portion on applying TCP to complex diagnoses as well as couples, families and groups. Participants will briefly review principles and techniques from Johnson and Lubin’s (2015)1 exposure-based approach to trauma treatment before exploring advanced practices and applications of the method. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the techniques in a more intimate setting, getting real-time feedback to further hone their skills in guiding clients through detailed trauma inquiries.

This course will introduce TCP approaches for more complex cases, such as people who suffer from borderline personality disorder and dissociative identity disorder. Participants will learn how to conduct trauma inquiries and counter avoidance when working with these populations, who typically have extensive trauma histories and complex presentations. Participants will also explore how to expand TCP to couples, families and group work, including navigating challenging relational dynamics using a trauma-centred lens.

Trauma for the purposes of this course will include interpersonal and familial trauma, as well as systemic, intergenerational and state violence forms of trauma (e.g., war, racism, poverty, heterosexism, etc.).

Rather than “telling”, this course will focus on learning through “doing”. It is designed to be experiential, allowing participants to actively engage in role plays and practice the techniques being taught. In addition, information will be provided throughout the course using case examples, conversation and handouts.

Participants will:

  • Further hone their skill in trauma-centred psychotherapy techniques and detailed trauma inquiry.
  • Apply TCP to complex presentations such as borderline personality disorder and dissociative identity disorder.
  • Apply TCP to work with couples, families and groups.
  • Receive real-time feedback in an experiential setting.
  • Have the opportunity to consult about current cases.
  • Obtain a handout of core techniques and practice examples.

Participants will engage in direct discussion and experiential work about difficult and traumatic subject material throughout the training.
