Course Description

Hours: 12

This Professional Development course is designed for practitioners who are new to regularly working with survivors of sexual violence or who may be already working with survivors and would like to more deeply inform their practice. While this workshop does not provide in-depth training in a specific modality, it will introduce and critically consider various assessments, modalities, theories, principles and ethics associated with working with adult survivors (all genders) of intimate partner violence, stalking, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. The training outcome is to develop effective responses to victims/survivors who disclose experiences of gendered and sexual violence that will sustain support and intervention from that point forward.

This course will leave participants with:

  • A conceptual framework for understanding sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking and online harassment.
  • An understanding of the complexities of responding to the effects and impacts of gender-based violence.
  • The ability to draw from a number of approaches to work collaboratively with adult survivors of sexual violence, addressing the relationship issues that may be specifically meaningful to them such as: self-advocacy in the legal system, interpersonal boundaries, intimacy after trauma, and political action.
  • An understanding of the general principles of risk assessment and imminent risk.
  • Practical and applicable tools for safety planning and risk assessment.
  • Specific counseling modalities and techniques that are proven effective for adult survivors of gender-based violence.
  • Basic skills in working with those who have caused harm.
  • Skills for managing your own responses to sexual harm.
