Course Description

Hours: 12

This two-day course is grounded in three complementary traditions of supervision literature:

  1. The Person-of-the-Therapist tradition, emphasizing the supervisor's role in helping clinicians understand how personal history, emotional themes, biases and vulnerabilities influence clinical work (Aponte et al., 2014).
  2. Psychoanalytic and relational supervision, emphasizing supervision as a reflective space for understanding transference, countertransference, enactments, resonance and unconscious dynamics (Scharff, 2014).
  3. Culturally humble supervision, emphasizing the creation of a "cultural third" where culture, identity, power, oppression and difference can be examined collaboratively rather than defensively (Watkins & Hook, 2016).

Throughout the course, participants will examine how supervisors can help clinicians develop greater awareness of themselves, their clients and the social contexts in which treatment occurs while remaining clinically grounded and therapeutically effective.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze the influence of culture, identity, power, privilege and oppression in supervision and psychotherapy.
  2. Apply culturally humble approaches to discussions of race, difference and power in supervision.
  3. Evaluate the role of self-awareness, emotional reactions and countertransference in supervisory practice.
  4. Develop supervisory interventions for therapists working with oppression, prejudice and identity-based challenges.
  5. Integrate anti-oppressive, relational and psychodynamic approaches in the supervision of complex clinical situations.
