Course Description

Hours: 12

Over the past few decades, research has highlighted the prevalence of trauma and how it interferes with every aspect of life. Despite clear evidence that trauma detrimentally impacts our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health, the discourse has historically centered the neurotypical experience and its impact on well-being. Neurodiversity is not a new concept, however, growing awareness that there are a range of ways we perceive, experience and interact with the world has brought increased attention to trauma in neurodivergent people. As our understanding of neurodiversity continues to develop, shifting our attention to the connection between neurologically based differences and trauma becomes important. Neurodivergence is often misunderstood, particularly in relation to trauma, and there is a great deal of confusion and overlap regarding both experiences. Although there are several similarities between trauma and neurodivergence, understanding the distinct differences that exist can assist us in supporting neurodivergent people more effectively.

This two-day workshop intends to support participants with developing a more nuanced appreciation of how trauma and neurodivergence intersect. It will examine various perspectives that influence our current understanding of trauma and neurodivergence, as well as explore factors which lead to specific experiences of trauma that neurodivergent people tend to encounter. It will also highlight important approaches/interventions that are best suited to support neurodivergent folks living with various outcomes of trauma, as well as complexities that special populations experience.
