Course Description

Hours: 12

In recent decades, research has underscored just how pervasive trauma is—and how deeply it can impact every aspect of life. Yet despite growing awareness, conversations around trauma have largely centered neurotypical experiences. As our understanding of neurodiversity evolves, it is becoming increasingly important to explore the connection between neurologically based differences and experiences of trauma.

While neurodivergence is not new, the rising recognition that people perceive, process and interact with the world in diverse ways brings fresh attention to the trauma that neurodivergent individuals often face. Trauma and neurodivergence can look similar, but they are not the same—and untangling these differences is essential for more effective, sensitive support.

This two-day professional development course is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of how trauma and neurodivergence intersect. Through experiential learning and group discussion this course will:

  • Explore how the medical and social models influence our perceptions of trauma and neurodivergence.
  • Build awareness of how ableism affects support and service delivery.
  • Examine the unique forms of trauma often experienced by neurodivergent individuals.
  • Identify approaches that best support neurodivergent people living with trauma.
  • Increase sensitivity to the layered complexities faced by special populations.

Please be advised that although this course is designed for mental health professionals, it may be challenging to navigate on a personal level. This training is not recommended for anyone who is currently experiencing their own trauma as some of the content may be activating.
